A moderate earthquake struck the island of Evia in the early hours of Monday, shaking residents awake as far as Athens. The tremor, which registered a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at 03:23 AM local time.
According to the Revised Solution from the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicenter was located 3 kilometers east of Prokopi in northern Evia. The earthquake originated at a depth of approximately 16.9 kilometers.
Earlier, the Institute’s Automatic Solution had placed the epicenter 8 kilometers east of Prokopi, at a shallower depth of 5 kilometers.
The tremor was strongly felt not only in several parts of the Attica region, including Athens and Elefsina, but also across the Sporades islands, such as Skiathos and Skopelos.
A second, smaller quake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale followed just 20 minutes later at 03:43 AM. This aftershock occurred in the same area — about 8 kilometers east-northeast of Prokopi — with a focal depth of 5 kilometers.
There have been no reports of damage or injuries at this time. However, authorities are closely monitoring the seismic activity in the region.
